Kouri Island, Okinawa
Kouri Island is a small tranquil getaway north of Nago in Okinawa. The island is a popular location for beach, kayaking, snorkeling and diving activities, and is famous for sea urchins. Driving over the bridge to Kouri Island, one of the longest toll-free bridges in Japan you are greeted with beautiful blue-green waters that change in color depending on the time of day.
Shops sell souvenirs, ice cream and vegetables for the many tourist who frequent the island.
The local farmers vegetable stand is also a common sight on the island. Payment is based on the honor system where you take what you need, and leave the appropriate cash in small box. Prices at this stand ranged from ¥100 - ¥200 (about 80 cents to $1.60 with the current exchange rate).
I'm always attracted to the local fishing ports. This one had a small sabani alongside a larger fishing boat.
Tourist gather under the bridge for a temporary escape from the sun.
